Modern sounds.

How the children of men can amuse themselves. On the mountain of Olympus, they play with the toys of the gods. They no longer are satisfied with the gadgeds of Thor, thundering over the fields of the vast plains on earth.

They wanted more and created their own gigs, then called it technology.

Inside the back of their lightning fast iron horses, they install big black boxes, with a capacity of a thousand years of thunder, captive behind a delicate mesh.

Even if this space allows room for only a dozen of eggs, they will al be broken and drooling in the onslaught of only one tiny little squeek from those monsters.

Thank you for the music.

Have you ever found the perfect guide to deafness? In an overly noisy world, how many will still say thank you each evening for the sense of hearing.

So taken for granted, this music we hear. Will the deaf be the reason we occasionally stop dead in our tracks. We pause for a moment, and wonder for a minute about their world. Then we put back the earphones, bombarding the fragile fleece in the inside of our hearing cavity.

We perceive hearing by two different pathways, air conduction and bone conduction. One in every five hundred children born today, will not be able to use one or both of these methods. They will be hearing disabled!

Guide for becoming deaf.

The one topic which will not need a guide of how to, is how to become a hearing impaired human. A serious lack of education, though exists in the field of prevention. We are mistaken to think the information overflow reach all ears in all disciplines of life.

Noise pollution is so very well accepted and the bearers of the battered ears do not perceive the dangers any more.

Hearing the loud and noisy, is synonym with living fast and dangerous. The jet plane is quick and effective, the music is intoxicating for the young and the strong.

Curing fire with fire.

Noises in the air, ever absent when the water and earth were separated, are dubbed with the term " white noise". You know the ceiling fan, making its whizz, whizz, whizz, and every third turn will give a screeching squeak sound. The cars hum the highway, a neat stone throw away from the bedroom window.

The rhytmic waves of this pattern, would seize to irritate, when we push the sound in the back corner of our consciousness. But the poor physical ear and the structure, still have to absorb this physical abuse.

Rightly so, we cannot push all sounds from our life. Even silence has a sound, if you listen careful enough. It sounds like the human race has got a problem, more scary than a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

How the implant works.
How the implant works.

Helping the innocent.

Technology, science and medicine integrated in such a way as to create the wonder of hearing for the born-deaf babies.

Made mostly from titanium and diamonds, the small piece of miracle technology gets implanted. For only approximately $80,000.00USD, the bearer will receive a cochlea.

This cochlea will function once an external speech processor, very similar to an hearing aid, gets attached to the outside of the ear. The waves caused by the sound will activate a magnetic sensitive field. This magnetism will send electrical signals, which in turn, stimulate the hearing nerve. These signals are recently upgraded to 83 000 pulses per second.

More than 120 channels and virtual channels help to differentiate between sounds and music.

Not too far in the future we will see no more external devices, as the researchers are making a break through in building the complete mechanism for internal fixation.

Implants in the brain-stem are already done for those without a hearing nerve!

Satish Gujral.
Satish Gujral.

Music and colour.

Satish Gujral is a very well known artist in India, being granted with the second highest acknowledgement possible in his country. For 62 lonely years he painted in silence. At the age of 71, he received a cochlear transplant. Suddenly his paintings changed, and the often dull colour gave way to vivid colours and lively pictures.

Follow the link to the official website of this remarkable man. His pure existence is a blessing and an eye opener to all of humankind. He taught us that hearing can colour your life and perspective and perception.

Negative aspects.

Since 1950, clever and empathetic souls have been working on this idea - helping people to hear. Another milestone is reached in the history of homo sapiens.

But, rightfully so and neccesarily, we will always have the sceptics, stimulating advance and a clear open approach to any situation.

We do not even tempt to make a list of the benefits of this implant, as it all is so obvious. But are there anything negative connected to this.

Yes, we do have con's. Primarily is the cost. As mentioned the initial price will be a estimate of $80,000.00USD. The implant warranty is 10 years, and if it get defective, it will be replaced free of charge.

However, the speech processor's warranty is only valid for three years. It has to be upgraded before the guarantee expires for round about $12,000.00USD.

Most medical insurance packages do not pay this expense. We find so often children receiving the device, but parent cannot afford to upgrade. Eventually the apparatus will quit and the child lose his gift of hearing.

On the 14th of July, an announcement had been made in Chennai. The government has found sponsors enough to give fifty children an implant.

Thus cost must be the primary problem experienced by the recipients.

The Prayer of the cricket.

                  Dear Loving Father,

Is it only You who love us?

Did You have to make us so chirpingly noisy, Lord?

Does all this clever chirping have to infuriate them so?

We silence the bow-string of our rasping, while they search

for us to quiten the night's cacophony, that ever-ready

torch and boot ready to crush out their anger.

We know we rob them of their sleep, Lord, but how is it

that the nicest, safest, driest places alwaysnhappen to be

                under their bedroom windows?

What is our purpose , Lord, other than penetratingly

                   tearing the quiet night-time peace?

We have such busy scuttling night lives, Lord, we patrol

Your ant's nests and have a taste for so wide a variety

of things. We don't think we're a nuisance, Lord, and we

love to hide in tight nooks and crannies, defying their search.

We climb, we hop, we crawl, we burrow, we squeeze,

                            and boy, can we scuttle!

Should we feel a little sorry that we have such

a loud and irritating presence, Lord?

We really are rather clever, Lord - Thank You for that.

Thank You, Lord, for making our presence heard,

                            for whatever it is worth!

                                       Amen.

-Margaret Roberts.-

Side effects.

This apparatus is static. This will pose problems, like radar detection. This is not really funny, as environmental elements like neon lights, might cause a constant buzzing perception. Computers might affect the implant, and because of the magnetism, MRI is contra indicated.

Physical activities must be approached with caution, due to breakage in contact sport, and pressure related problems when scuba diving.

Surgical side effects may include staphylococcus infection, vertigo (dizziness) and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Fortunately these patients are relatively at low risk for these side effects.

Some patients has experienced partial facial paralysis, but has been found to be a temporary effect.

Let us appreciate.

Hearing is a privilege and not a right to be abused and ignored. If we can only live without causing harm, unto ourselves, or unto others.

We all are so grateful for those whom has never given up on the opportunity to help others to hear. They are true hero's, not always well known, but very much appreciated.

And for those who can enjoy this gift of hearing, a sound had been added below. The sound of crickets, stretched to a lifeline of a human lifetime. It is music to the ears, listen, and then you will know....

Thanks for a nice, educative Hub. Satish Gujral's story is very touching. There are so many things in life we take for granted - I'm glad he got it rectified though and it's amazing to see the difference it made to his paintings.

Very interesting read - Thanks. :)

Hi, thanks for this informative hub. I find that I often have to retreat to the sanctuary of the countryside to escape from this noisy, mad, hectic world, not only for the sake of my hearing but for the sake of my sanity. Thank you my friend for sharing.

This is really a fantastic hub, you put a lot of work into this and it shows. I agree, with DAL on this, I must have peace and quite, the world I needed when I was younger to feed of the energy, however now it just drains me and I also know why I can't hear that great, I would blast my music in my care to rock-in-roll. Elena, it was quite amazing for me as well to learn that hearing has a impact on our ability to perceive colour. Just as amazing to learn we can help people to hear with an implant in the brainstem.

Thanx for commenting.

D.A.L. The sanity, perhaps are sometimes more neccesary to protect than anything else. You are right, we actually have to "flee" from all the noise created by cities.

Thankfully, there are still places of peace and quiet where we can run to!

Darlene, loud music in a car on a long road can be very stimulating. It shortens the road and is not a boring companion. I think we can admit that we all have been guilty of turning the music a bit noisier than needed on many occasions.

But I have seen a tendency amongst the young ones to overdo this a bit. I wonder if it is because all the techno is more afordable for them.

As we grow older we can more appreciate the quite moments, I agree. We just learn with time to balance the extremes. Unfortunately we pick up "wear and tear" along the way.

Thank you for the comment and the rate. I do appreciate it my dearest friend.

What an interesting hub, Equealla. You touch on so many different concepts. Your intro made me think of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. And so many times I am overwhelmed by the noise that surrounds us... your words surely strike a chord with me.

You are right to say that hearing is a privilege that ought to appreciate more fully. I look forward to appreciating small, subtle sounds more now. Thank you for the inspiration.

Simone, I am sure glad you received inspiration for appreciation. I must admit, though, that I will have to come to this place on a regular basis myself, to be reminded of small priviledges. We forget so quickly when we get busy!

Good hub topic, I know a man who had an inner ear infection and went deep under water during some training. It was a bad time to do that because the pressure blew his ear drums out. Pain, vomiting, dizziness, ringing in the ears, he had all that and more. Suffered ear problems for years. Good information here. Thank you.

susanlang: Yes there are so many ways we can damage ourselves, without taking concern beforehand. Strange that we always think we are indestructible so long as everything is in working order. The human body is actually so fragile, and have to maintain such fine balances for optimal functioning.

Thank you for your time spend with me.

I love listening to music! It would be one of my worst nightmares to lose that! Music is my method for relaxation, for stress relief, and for even combating lonliness--when the house is too quiet. Thank you for the reminder of how blessed we are when we can hear effortlessly.

Daena: You are so right. Music is an equally great gift as hearing. We need both to be able to apreciate both.

I cannot imagine a world without sound. I so much need the rich harmonies and rhythm of music, of the sounds of the birds and the rustles of leaves, they make up a huge part of my daily enjoyment of life.

Thanks for a really interesting Hub.

Love and peace

Tony, the glory and priviledge of the mere fact of hearing these things, is indeed something to be ever grateful for! I just finished listening to Susan Boyle, and the sound of her voice, and even now the sound of the night silence are all golden moments of being alive, feeling blessed. I apreciate you sharing the sentiments.
